Desert of the heart. Oh, I'm just a font of happiness today. It was a sombre afternoon at Capital Xtra's offices after learning that lesbian novelist, activist and icon Jane Rule died yesterday. Rule (1931-2007) had a very long association with Pink Triangle Press which began when Xtra was just a twinkle in the eye of The Body Politic more than 20 years ago. She contributed dozens of pieces - among the very best the press has published. I'm fond of quoting her stance on marriage, "I'm not against people marrying if they want to, but I just wish they didn't want to." She will be missed by friends in both the writing and activist circles. Xtra.ca is lucky to have an extensive archive of her work. It's worth browsing.
